FREE Self-Defence Course for Women and Girls Coming to Cooktown

Women and girls in Cooktown will soon have the chance to learn life-saving self-defence skills thanks to a new initiative aimed at empowering participants with confidence, awareness, and practical techniques.

Kicking off on 1 March 2025, the Girls and Women’s Self-Defence Course will run over three weekends at the Cooktown Events Centre, providing expert-led training in personal safety and risk prevention. The program is completely free, but spaces are strictly limited to 16 participants to allow for personalised instruction.

The initiative is being delivered through a partnership between the Queensland Government, NQ Sports Foundation, and Cook Shire Council, with the aim of equipping local women and girls with the tools they need to protect themselves.

A timely and essential program

With women’s safety an ongoing concern across Australia, this program is designed to address real-world threats and teach practical self-defence strategies that can be used in everyday situations. Led by a professional instructor with over 20 years of experience in martial arts, participants will learn:

  • Situational awareness – How to recognize and avoid potential dangers before they escalate.
  • Self-defence within Queensland Law – Understanding when and how to act in self-protection.
  • Practical defence techniques – Simple but effective moves designed to help in real-life encounters.
  • Confidence & empowerment – Helping women feel stronger, safer, and more in control.

With demand expected to be high, participants are encouraged to register early to secure their place.
