Council in Action – Housing and Health Services

Cook Shire Council has been working hard to advocate for improved access to health services and housing across the region, and while there’s still more to do, we’ve made some important progress.

Since July 2023, Council has been actively engaging with government agencies, service providers, and key stakeholders to push for better healthcare and more housing options. Our latest Did You Know? video highlights some of the key actions taken so far:

  • Successfully pushed for the long-over due upgrade of the Cooktown Hospital
  • Secured commitment for new state housing projects, including 50 new State houses in Cooktown
  • Leased several parcels of Land to QBuild for them to provide temporary workers accommodations for those contractors building the above 50 houses, without causing additional strain on the housing supply
  • Advocating for a health clinic in Lakeland, working alongside the Lakeland Progress Association to ensure residents have access to essential health services.
  • Engaging with State and Federal Governments to push for increased investment in healthcare services and infrastructure.
  • Supporting local initiatives aimed at improving access to medical care in remote communities

We Heard You – And We’re Taking Action

In the 2023 Community Scorecard Survey, residents told us that access to housing and healthcare were some of the biggest challenges facing our region. We listened – and we’re working hard to ensure our communities receive the services and support they need.

We know there’s still more to do, and we’re committed to continuing this advocacy in partnership with our community.
