Cook Shire Celebrates International Women’s Day at Nature’s Powerhouse

Cook Shire came together yesterday to celebrate International Women’s Day at Nature’s Powerhouse in Cooktown. The event was proudly organised by the Cooktown District Community Centre (CDCC) and the Regional Arts Services Network (RASN), in partnership with the Cook Shire Council.

The event provided a powerful platform for honouring the achievements and contributions of women from all walks of life. With an inspiring line-up of guest speakers, who shared their stories, struggles, and triumphs, sparking meaningful conversations on gender equality, empowerment, and community strength. Special thanks to Helen Gordon for the Acknowledgement to Country, and to Jenni James, Centre Manager, Country Universities Centre Cape York, Ashton Viranatuleo, and Dora Gibson for their insightful and thought-provoking speeches.

Attendees were also treated to beautiful live music, thanks to the talents of Rachel Chapman, and Dora Gibson, accompanied by her family, whose performances added an extra touch of joy and celebration to the day.

The event celebrated the incredible women of our Shire, reflecting the community’s commitment to equality, empowerment, and support for one another. The day concluded with calico painting for the 2025 International Women’s Day quilt and a delicious morning tea provided by Nature’s Powerhouse.
