Cooktown Works Update – June 2025

Cooktown Works Update June 2025

Cook Shire Council is progressing a range of important infrastructure works across Cooktown to improve the safety, usability and appearance of our streets. Here’s what’s currently underway and what you can expect over the coming weeks:

Kerb and Channel Upgrades Underway

Kerb and channel replacement works have commenced on:

  • May Street
  • Furneaux Street
  • Howard Street
  • Adams Street

A subcontractor has started on-site placement of kerbing this week, with backfilling to occur after the concrete has properly set. These upgrades will improve water runoff, help manage stormwater more effectively, and enhance the longevity of our road network.

Traffic Island Barrier Kerb Installation

Council teams will also be installing a barrier kerb for the traffic island at the corner of Charlotte and Walker streets this week. This work forms part of Council’s broader efforts to enhance road safety and improve pedestrian visibility in key locations.

Asphalt and Seal Works – Coming Soon

Asphalt and sealing works are scheduled to begin in the second week of July on the following roads:

  • May Street
  • Furneaux Street
  • Howard Street
  • Garden Street
  • Adams Street

Weather permitting, these works are expected to be completed by Tuesday 16 July 2025, if not sooner. Council thanks residents and road users in advance for their patience during this time.

Line Marking to Follow

Once the asphalt and sealing is complete, line marking will be carried out to finalise the road upgrades. These finishing touches will improve safety and clearly delineate road use.

Heritage Gutter Cleaning – 16 to 26 June

In addition to the roadworks, Council will undertake Heritage Gutter cleaning in Cooktown, starting Monday 16 June 2025 and continuing for approximately 10 days. These works are part of Council’s commitment to preserving Cooktown’s unique heritage streetscape and ensuring proper drainage during the wet season.

Council appreciates the community’s understanding as we deliver these critical works. For enquiries or more information, please contact our Customer Service team on 4082 0500 or email mail@cook.qld.gov.au
