Power outage impacting some Council facilities

Public update regarding the power outage impacting some council facilities.

Cook Shire Council advises residents that a major power outage across Cooktown is currently affecting the operation of some Council facilities today, Friday 6 March 2026.

Due to the outage, the following changes are in place:

Cooktown Swimming Pool
The Cooktown Swimming Pool will be closed today due to the power outage. If power is restored, the pool is expected to reopen at its normal time of 1.00pm tomorrow.

Cooktown Library
The Cooktown Library will be closed today. If power is restored, the library will reopen tomorrow with extended hours from 9.00am to 2.00pm.

At this stage, confirmation is not yet available regarding whether Ayton Library will be open tomorrow.

Nature’s Powerhouse
Nature’s Powerhouse is open as normal and operating on generator power.

Council appreciates the community’s understanding while the power outage continues and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
