A new Friday after-school program is coming to the Cooktown Events Centre.
Delivered in partnership with Thoegayn Zugub, the Stars Above, Hoops Below program will run over 10 weeks at the Cooktown Events Centre, commencing Friday 24 April 2026.
The program is designed for young people aged 10–17 and brings together physical activity, leadership development and cultural identity in a safe and supportive environment.
Using basketball as the foundation, each weekly session combines on-court skill development with guided leadership discussions, helping participants build confidence, resilience and positive decision-making skills.
The program aligns with broader goals to:
- Strengthen cultural identity and pride
- Build leadership capacity in young people
- Improve social and emotional wellbeing
- Encourage healthy lifestyles and community connection
Over the 10 weeks, participants will explore themes including identity, respect, resilience, leadership and future pathways, all while developing their basketball skills and working as part of a team.
