Young gardeners got their hands dirty this week as around 20 children took part in the popular Pot Up a Plant workshop at the Cooktown Botanic Gardens Nursery as part of Botanic Gardens Week 2026.
The hands-on afternoon session gave participants the opportunity to learn basic potting techniques and plant care while planting their own pineapple or pumpkin seedling to take home and grow.
Children also had the chance to take home an established coconut plant, adding an extra tropical touch to the experience and encouraging continued interest in gardening at home.
The workshop formed part of Cook Shire Council’s Botanic Gardens Week program, which celebrates nature, biodiversity, creativity and community connection through a range of family-friendly activities and events held throughout the week.
Botanic Gardens Week continues until Sunday 24 May, culminating in Botanic Gardens Day at the Cooktown Botanic Gardens with live music, workshops, competitions, kids activities and more.
