Cooktown Discovery Festival loud noise alert.

Plan ahead and prepare for the loud festival events during the Cooktown Discovery Festival.

Pet owners are encouraged to plan ahead for the Cooktown Discovery Festival, with both the traditional musket firing and fireworks display expected to create loud noise that may cause stress for animals.

Firing of muskets: Friday 19 June 6:30 PM – 6:35 PM

Fireworks: Saturday 20 June 8:15 PM – 8:25 PM

While these events are popular highlights of the annual festival, sudden loud sounds can be unsettling for pets, particularly dogs, cats and other animals sensitive to noise. Frightened pets may attempt to escape yards, hide, or become distressed during and after the events.

Simple steps can help keep pets secure and stress-free, including:
  • Bringing pets indoors before these events occur.
  • Checking fences, gated, and enclosures are secure.
  • Closing doors, windows and curtains to help reduce noise.
  • Ensuring identification tags and microchip details are current.
  • Keep them company or provide a safe, familiar space for them.

Pet owners should consider taking any necessary precautions to help ensure their furry friends remain safe and comfortable while the Cooktown Discovery Festival celebrations take place.
