Stronger Together Community Choir returns with free workshop weekend

Cook Shire’s Stronger Together Community Choir is back this August, with a free weekend of singing, choir leadership and community connection in Cooktown.

Held at the Cooktown Events Centre on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August, the workshop weekend will bring new and returning singers together while also giving community members the opportunity to learn practical skills for leading a choir.

Experienced choir leader Jane Younghusband will guide participants through the weekend, building on the Stronger Together Community Choir workshops and performance held earlier this year.

Whether you’d like to learn how to lead a group, return to sing some familiar songs, or simply give community singing a go for the first time, there’s a session for you.

Learn to lead

Choir leadership workshops will be held on both Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10am to 12pm.

Designed as a practical introduction to leading and conducting a community choir, the sessions will explore skills including vocal warm-ups, harmonies and vocal parts, maintaining tempo, teaching songs and conducting.

Participants will also have opportunities to put their new skills into practice by leading singers.

Come and sing

On Saturday afternoon from 1pm to 3.30pm, singers who have previously participated in the Stronger Together Community Choir are invited to return, rehearse familiar songs and help support our emerging choir leaders.

Then on Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 3.30pm, we’re opening the doors to everyone for a full community choir rehearsal.

New singers are very welcome and no previous choir experience is needed.

The weekend will also help the choir prepare for an opportunity to perform in front of a crowd at a special community event planned for October.

Come for one session or make a weekend of it — the workshops are free and everyone is welcome. Please book the sessions you wish to attend.
