Far North Queensland has no shortage of stories to tell, and this October, some of the region’s best will be screening right here in Cooktown!
The 2025 Understory Film Festival finalist selection brings together 24 outstanding short films created across Far North Queensland, showcasing the talent, imagination and distinctive voices of filmmakers across the region.
Each finalist film runs for less than eight minutes, packing plenty of creativity, storytelling and personality into a bite-sized screening experience.
The 24 finalist films have been shortlisted by a professional team of judges from an amazing range of submissions, delivering a vibrant mix. Expect a touch of horror, feel-good music videos, clever animation, insightful documentaries, heartfelt drama and plenty of laughs along the way.
Pack a picnic, set up behind the Orchid House at Nature’s Powerhouse on Saturday 10 October 2026, and settle in for an evening celebrating FNQ filmmaking. Screenings begin at 6:30pm.
More than films on a screen
For more than 12 years, the Understory Film Festival has helped grow and celebrate Far North Queensland’s screen culture, creating opportunities for emerging and established filmmakers to share their work and develop their craft.
The festival celebrates stories shaped by the landscapes, people, humour, experiences and creative communities of the Far North, giving those stories a platform to be seen.
Don’t miss this chance to experience the creativity and storytelling happening across the region.
