A planning green light for the Cooktown Hospital redevelopment, new opportunities at Cooktown Airport and upcoming school holiday activities feature in the latest Moment with the Mayor.
Cook Shire Council unanimously approved the development application for the staged redevelopment of the Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service at its September meeting.
While the application could ordinarily have been decided by the Chief Executive Officer under delegation, it was referred to the full Council due to the significant community interest in the project.
The approval is an important planning step, but does not determine the Queensland Government’s funding, construction schedule or future delivery of health services.
Mayor Robyn Holmes welcomed the progress and encouraged residents interested in discussing critical care and emergency services in Cooktown to contact her.
Supporting the future growth of Cooktown Airport
Council also approved a development application establishing 19 long-term aviation lease areas at Cooktown Airport.
The approval provides a framework for the airport to grow gradually in response to demand, attract aviation-related businesses and strengthen Cooktown’s role as a regional service centre.
Petition formally received
Council formally received a petition concerning an emotional support animal and access to the Cooktown Library.
Receiving the petition allows the issues raised, relevant legislation and Council’s responsibilities to be carefully reviewed.
The matter will return to a future Council meeting, with consideration given to accessibility and inclusion, as well as the safety, comfort and fair use of the library by the whole community.
School holiday activities continue
Council’s free tennis program wrapped up this week following a fantastic turnout, with more than 30 children taking part.
Drama workshops begin next week, while learn-to-swim sessions and library activities continue across the Shire.
Wallaby Creek Festival is on this weekend, followed by Conquer the Corrugations and The Spirits of Cooktown over the October long weekend.
