Battery Round-up Challenge Terms & Conditions

2. Competition Name

Battery Round-Up Challenge (the “Competition”).

3. Competition Period

The Competition opens on Friday 7 August 2026 and closes at 4pm on  Saturday 31 October 2026.

All times are Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) unless otherwise stated.

4. Eligibility
i. Entry is open to residents, households, schools, community groups and sporting clubs located within the Cook Shire local government area.

ii. Entrants may enter as one of the following categories:

  • Household
  • School
  • Community Group or Sporting Club

iii. An individual entering on behalf of a school, community group or sporting club must be authorised to do so.

iv. Entrants under 18 years of age must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian.

5. How to Enter

Entry is free. No purchase is necessary.

To enter the Competition, during the competition period, eligible entrants must:

i. Collect eligible household batteries during the Competition Period.

ii. Safely transport the batteries to a participating Cook Shire Council Waste Transfer Station (Ayton, Cooktown, Laura and Lakeland) during normal operating hours.

iii. Present the batteries to Council Waste Transfer Station staff before depositing them into the battery collection unit.

iv. Council Waste Transfer Station staff will inspect the batteries to ensure they are suitable for recycling under the Competition.

v. Eligible batteries will be weighed by Council Waste Transfer Station staff.

vi. Council Waste Management Coordinator will calculate the number of Competition entries based on the quantity and type of eligible batteries or battery-containing products, and verified by Council Waste Transfer Station staff as outlined in section 8 of these Terms and Conditions.

vii. The battery weight, corresponding number of Competition entries and entrant details will be recorded on the official Entry Form.

viii. Council Waste Transfer Station staff will sign or initial the record to verify the entry.

ix. The entrant must ensure their details have been correctly recorded before leaving the Waste Transfer Station.

x. Batteries deposited without first being presented to Council Waste Transfer Station staff for weighing and recording are not eligible for the Competition.

xi. Entrants may make multiple battery drop-offs throughout the Competition Period. Each drop-off will be weighed, recorded and verified separately.

6. Eligible Batteries

i. The Competition accepts common portable household batteries, including:

  • AA
  • AAA
  • C
  • D
  • 9V
  • Button and coin batteries
  • Rechargeable household batteries
  • Lithium-ion household batteries
  • Power tool batteries
  • Batteries from household electronic devices
  • Electronic goods where battery cannot be removed but it is rechargeable (portable speakers, battery packs, electric tooth brushes, toys, fit bits etc.
  • Vapes and e-cigarettes
  • Other battery types accepted through Council’s battery recycling program.

ii. The following are not accepted:

  • Automotive batteries
  • Industrial batteries
  • Commercial battery waste
  • Damaged, leaking, swollen, smoking or unsafe batteries
  • Any battery type not accepted by the participating recycling program.

iii. Council reserves the right to refuse any battery considered unsafe or unsuitable.

7. Battery safety and Acceptable Conduct

i. Entrants must safely store and transport batteries.

ii. For your own safety, terminals of lithium, rechargeable, button, coin and 9V batteries should be taped before transport.

iii. Batteries should be transported in a non-metal container wherever practicable.

iv. Damaged or unsafe batteries must not be deposited into Competition collection bins.

v. Entrants must not:

a. remove batteries from existing recycling collection points;

b. collect batteries unlawfully;

c. dismantle devices unsafely;

d. submit commercial battery waste; or

e. engage in unsafe or illegal behaviour.

vi. Participation is entirely at the entrant’s own risk.

vii. Council may reject any entry where unsafe practices have occurred.

8. Allocation of Competition Entries

i. Competition entries will be allocated according to the quantity and type of eligible batteries or battery-containing products accepted and verified by Council Waste Transfer Station staff.

ii. Entries will be allocated as follows:

  • Loose household batteries including rechargeable household batteries: 1 entry for every 100 grams accepted.
  • Eligible products containing an embedded or non-removable battery: 1 entry per item.
  • Eligible larger rechargeable batteries, including removable power-tool, e-bike or e-scooter batteries: 1 entry per battery.

iii. An eligible battery or product may only be counted once. Council will determine the applicable entry category where an item could reasonably fall within more than one category.

iv. Partial weights will be calculated proportionately or rounded in accordance with Council’s approved competition procedure. Where multiple deliveries are made, all weights are totalled, for a final number of entries.

v. Council Waste Transfer Station staff will:

  • inspect the batteries or battery-containing products;
  • confirm their eligibility and applicable entry category;
  • weigh loose batteries where required;
  • calculate the number of Competition entries;
  • record the entrant’s details, verified weight or item quantity, and corresponding number of entries on the Official Entry Form; and
  • verify the record by signing or initialling the Official Entry Form or Competition register.

vi. The entrant must review the recorded information and complete and sign the Official Entry Form to confirm their entry.

vii. The weight, item quantity and number of entries recorded and verified by Council staff will be the official record for the Competition and will be final, subject to clause 8.viii.

viii. Council may audit Competition records and correct any clerical, calculation or administrative error before the prize draw.

ix. No entries will be allocated for batteries or products that are ineligible, unsafe to handle, improperly presented or not accepted by Council.

9. Prize Draw

i. Each verified Competition entry recorded under Clause 8 represents the verified number of entries into the prize draw.

ii. Winners will be selected by random draw following the close of the Competition.

iii. The prize draw will take place at Cook Shire Council’s Administration Office.

iv. Council’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

10. Prizes

i. Prizes include:

a. First Prize

  • $750 Visa Debit Card, and
  • $250 Waste Transfer Station Voucher

b. Second Prize

  • $250 Visa Debit Card, and
  • $250 Waste Transfer Station Voucher

c. Third Prize

  • $250 Waste Transfer Station Voucher

d. Total prize pool valued at $1,750.00

ii. Prizes are not transferable.

iii. Prizes cannot be exchanged for cash.

iv. Prizes may be substituted by Council with a prize of equal or greater value if required.

v. Any prize awarded to a school or community organisation will be awarded to that organisation, not an individual representative.

11. Winner notification and publication

i. Winners will be notified by telephone within seven (7) days of the Competition closing.

ii. Winners may also be announced on Council’s website, social media channels and other promotional material.

iii. If a winner cannot be contacted after reasonable attempts within fourteen (14) days, Council may conduct a redraw.

iv. Where a winning entrant is under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must accept the prize on their behalf.

12. Publicity

i. By accepting a prize, winners consent to Council using their name, suburb or community, photographs and prize presentation images for promotional purposes associated with the Competition.

ii. Where a winner is under 18 years of age, parent or guardian consent will be obtained before any identifying information or photographs are published.

13. Privacy

i. Council collects personal information for the purpose of administering the Competition, verifying entries, contacting entrants and winners, awarding prizes and reporting Competition outcomes.

iii. Individuals may request access to their personal information.

14. General

i. Council is not responsible for lost, late or incomplete entries.

ii. Council may verify eligibility and request evidence supporting an entry.

iii. Council may disqualify any entrant who provides false or misleading information or breaches these Terms and Conditions.

iv. Council reserves the right to amend, suspend or cancel the Competition where circumstances beyond its control prevent the Competition from proceeding.

v. Council accepts no liability for loss, damage or injury arising from participation in the Competition except where required by law.
