Prepare for the unpredictable with our Extreme Weather Clean-Up Days! Safeguard your property and your family from potential hazards by taking advantage of our free* disposal service for various types of waste.
Commencing at Ayton and Lakeland on Saturday 26 April 2025 and in Laura and Cooktown on Sunday 27 April, community members are encouraged to clear their property of potential hazard and debris. A clean yard is safer for your family and helps protect your home during fires, floods and storms.

During this time, you can dispose of the following items for free:
- Green Waste:Â Palm fronds, branches, trees, coconuts
- Mixed Construction Materials:Â Treated timber, old fence posts, pallets, plasterboard, plywood, etc.
- Packing Materials:Â Plastic and cardboard packaging
- Outdoor Furniture:Â Excludes beds and mattresses
- Broken Wheelie Bins
- Asbestos:Â Up to 200L, double-wrapped in 0.2mm plastic (Visqueen), sealed with tape, and clearly marked
- Scrap Metal:Â Excludes gas-containing white goods and pressurized vessels like fire extinguishers and gas bottles
- Car Batteries
- E-Waste:Â TVs, computers, printers, and accessories
- Regulated Waste:Â Up to 20L of oils, paints, and coolants
- Chemicals and Pesticides:Â Up to 5L
Fees and charges will apply for:
- Tyres
- Mixed household and commercial waste
- Beds & mattresses
- Fridges, freezers, air-conditioners
- Concrete, soil, bricks
*Note: All waste must be pre-sorted into single waste streams. Mixed or unsorted waste will incur charges according to council fees and charges.
