Stories that Shaped Us – Special National Reconciliation Week event

Stories That Shaped Us invites the community to explore the people, places, and moments that have shaped our shared history. Through a series of visual and informational displays, this National Reconciliation Week event brings together stories of resilience, connection, and truth—from Indigenous knowledge and cultural history to the impacts of colonisation and the legacy we continue to walk with today.

Held at Gungarde Hall, the exhibition-style event will feature a range of themed stalls, offering an opportunity for the community to listen, learn, and reflect. It’s a chance to better understand the stories behind familiar names and places—and to recognise Cooktown’s unique role in Australia’s reconciliation journey.

Inspired by this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, All In, the event aims to create a welcoming space for people to come together, reflect on shared histories and celebrate the people, places and stories that have helped shape our communities.

The event is expected to feature a collection of stories, photographs, memories, displays and community contributions that highlight local experiences, culture and connection across generations.

Community groups, organisations and individuals who would like to be involved are encouraged to contact Melissa Griffiths at Gungarde Community Centre.

Cook Shire Council is proud to support this community-led initiative alongside local organisations and community groups as part of the Shire’s broader National Reconciliation Week program.
