Cooktown Fire & Rescue give old vehicles new life to help save lives

Did you know that Cook Shire Council regularly support the Cooktown Fire & Rescue team by providing end-of-life vehicles from our Cooktown Waste Transfer Station for critical training. In a fantastic example of repurposing waste and promoting community partnership, these vehicles, once disposed of by residents, are now playing an important role in building our region’s disaster response and recovery capabilities.

Recently, the Fire & Rescue team was able to conduct a night training exercise using a donated car. This hands-on practice is essential for responders to develop the skills required for safe and effective rescues in real-life collision scenarios. Fire & Rescue frequently seek such vehicles for their exercises, and we’re pleased that the Council can contribute to this life-saving work while promoting recycling within the community.

After a successful training session, the Fire & Rescue team expressed their gratitude: “Thanks so much for the cars last night. It is so good that we can do this training.” A request has been made for additional vehicles to be set aside for upcoming exercises.
