Update on Cooktown water supply

We want to reassure the community that all investigations indicate the discolored water is not related to Council infrastructure, treatments, or any mistakes. The likely cause is natural, linked to minerals introduced by landslides and flooding during Tropical Cyclone Jasper, combined with seasonal dry conditions.

The water remains safe to drink. Council crews are flushing multiple parts of town every second day to help eliminate any build-up of residue in the system.

We are awaiting detailed results from water samples sent to specialist labs last week. The testing for minerals takes 10 working days, and we expect to receive the results by 6 December 2024. These results will provide further insights to guide our next steps.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this issue. Further updates will be shared as soon as new information becomes available.
