Cook Shire Council continues to actively manage the ongoing water discolouration issue and appreciates the community’s patience as we work toward a resolution.
While laboratory results from specialist testing are expected by 6 December 2024, we began treating the situation as if increased iron levels are present in the catchment.
To address this, a post-chlorination system has been installed at the Annan Water Treatment Plant. This system oxidizes soluble iron, turning it into non-soluble iron, which is then trapped in the filters. This has already improved water quality. However, as it appears the underlying issue stems from changes in the catchment itself, we cannot yet say the problem is fully resolved.
To gather further insights, we’ve reached out to environmental groups that sample the Annan and Wallaby Rivers to compare data. Additionally, we’ve ordered reagents to measure iron and manganese levels onsite at the Annan Water Treatment Plant. Once in place, this will allow us to better adjust our treatment processes in real time.
The delay in receiving lab results is due to unforeseen equipment failures at the Cairns NATA-accredited lab, requiring samples to be sent to additional facilities.
Council is committed to keeping the community informed and will provide updates as new information becomes available. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to improve water quality and monitor the situation closely.
