Cooktown Botanic Gardens is thrilled to announce that its Amorphophallus titanum, commonly known as the Titan Arum or “corpse flower,” is on the verge of its first-ever bloom. This highly anticipated event is expected to take place within the next week, marking a rare and remarkable milestone for this unique plant.
The dedicated Botanic Gardens team informed us today that the spathe—the outer sheath that surrounds the bloom—has begun to emerge, signaling that the long-awaited flowering stage is imminent. Known for its striking size and infamous scent, the Titan Arum earns its nickname “corpse flower” from the pungent odor it emits, often compared to rotting flesh. While the exact time and date of the bloom remain uncertain, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.
The Titan Arum is one of the world’s largest and most fascinating flowering plants, renowned not only for its odor but also for its rarity. It takes between seven to ten years for a Titan Arum to produce its first bloom, and subsequent blooms occur only once every four to five years.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for our Gardens and the community,” said Nikko Menzel, Curator of the Cooktown Botanic Gardens. “The blooming of the Titan Arum – whom we call Big Betty – is a testament to the patience and care of our team, and it’s an opportunity to witness a true marvel of nature.”
Big Betty is currently on display in the Orchid House at the Gardens. Visitors eager to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event should stay tuned for updates, as the blooming process unfolds unpredictably.
The Gardens will be sharing more information as the event approaches to ensure everyone has the chance to experience the wonder of this rare botanical phenomenon.
