Community spirit, resilience, and outstanding achievements were celebrated at Cook Shire Council’s Australia Day Awards event. Australia Day Ambassador Kevin Hughes BM OAM joined the celebrations, sharing his inspiring journey of service and resilience.
Mayor Robyn Holmes praised the award recipients, saying, “The Australia Day Awards are a chance to highlight the extraordinary people who make our Shire such a vibrant and supportive place to live. Their dedication to their communities is both humbling and inspiring.”
Citizen of the Year: David “Chappy” Kamholtz
David “Chappy” Kamholtz has been a pillar of the Cook Shire community for over 15 years. As a school chaplain, firefighter, and active volunteer, his work has positively influenced countless lives. His annual Fathers and Sons bike ride fosters respect, resilience and connection, while his role in community events including the Cooktown Discovery Festival re-enactment reflects his deep dedication to preserving local culture.
Mayor Holmes remarked, “David’s selfless commitment to community reflect the values of leadership and service that strengthen our Shire.”
Young Citizen of the Year: Sarah Frew
A shining example of leadership and resilience, Sarah Frew stepped into the role of Acting Disaster Management Coordinator during Cyclone Jasper, proving her competence under pressure. As President of the Cooktown Horse Sports Association, she has revitalized the organization, increasing its membership and hosting inclusive events.
“Sarah’s energy and determination are remarkable,” said Mayor Holmes. “Her ability to lead in challenging situations is truly inspiring.”

TC Jasper Community Heroes – Special presentation
This year, 29 remarkable individuals were also honoured as TC Jasper Community Heroes for their courage, teamwork, and selflessness during one of the Shire’s most challenging times. Nominated by the community, these local heroes played crucial roles in safeguarding the wellbeing of others, embodying resilience and solidarity. This list of recipients highlights just some of the extraordinary efforts made during that time and stands as a tribute to the countless heroes who stepped up to support their communities when it mattered most.
