Forklift training: Upskilling our team

Cook Shire staff undergoing forklift training

With a commitment to upskilling our staff, while enhancing efficiency and workplace safety, earlier this week, seven Council employees successfully undertook certified forklift training.

The training included staff from across Council’s Bridge, Roads and Civil, and Workshop teams who all gained essential skills to safely and efficiently operate forklifts in the workplace.

Forklifts are used daily in Council’s depot stores and workshop areas to manage deliveries from across Queensland. With loads arriving weekly—sometimes even daily—having fully licensed and appropriately trained staff is crucial in preventing workplace incidents, protecting goods from damage, and maintaining productivity.

Council is committed to upskilling its workforce and prioritises local training providers from Cairns and surrounding areas wherever possible. Training programs such as forklift licensing, Working at Heights, Confined Spaces, and Fit Testing for respiratory masks ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills to perform their roles safely and effectively.

Training is funded both internally and externally, with valuable support from the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) helping to make these opportunities possible. By investing in vocational training, Council not only enhances staff capabilities but also builds confidence, strengthens teams, and ensures the delivery of high-quality services to the community.
