COOKTOWN – In a decision that has sparked strong reactions from the community, Cook Shire Council has voted 4-3 to remove fluoride from Cooktown’s water supply.

The meeting saw standing room only, with cheers and applause erupting from the gallery following the vote. Many attendees promptly left Council Chambers after the decision, with some not staying to hear the revised motion put forward by Cr Dear that specifically called to cease fluoridation of the Cooktown water supply.

The vote followed months of discussion, during which Councillors sought input from community members, reviewed expert advice, and considered various perspectives on fluoridation. Today’s meeting began with deputations from Lee House of Stapleton of the Cook Shire Ratepayers and Residents Association (CSRRA), who opposed fluoridation, and Dr Natasha Coventry and Dr Des Hill representing Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Services, who advocated for its continuation.

While both sides acknowledged that excessive sugar consumption is the primary driver of tooth decay and disease—a serious health concern in regional and remote communities—Council ultimately decided to cease fluoridation of the Cooktown water supply.

Mayor Robyn Holmes said:

“It’s difficult to dismiss the advice of Queensland and national medical professionals, agencies, and reports. However, Council has made its decision based on the perspectives shared throughout the process.”

“Council has carefully considered community feedback and expert advice. While health authorities recommend continuing fluoridation, the decision ultimately rests with Council, and today’s outcome reflects the position put forward by many residents. We acknowledge this has been a topic of strong debate, and we respect the perspectives shared throughout this process.”

“I am relieved that a decision has been made on this issue. Fluoridation of the water supply is fundamentally a health matter, and it would be more appropriate for the State Government to take responsibility for such decisions. Local Councils should not have to invest significant time and resources into matters that fall within the realm of public health.”

Under the Water Fluoridation Act 2008, Cook Shire Council must now follow the required process to cease fluoridation. This includes:

    • Notifying the Chief Executive of the Department of Health, via the required form.

    • Making the notification publicly accessible, such as on the Council website and in newspapers.

    • Providing 30 days’ notice before fluoridation ceases.

With the notification process set to commence today, fluoridation could cease as soon as 25 March 2025.

Council remains committed to open and transparent decision-making and encourages continued community engagement on this and other important local matters. Residents can stay informed and involved by attending Council meetings, visiting the Council website, or contacting Council directly.
