Council joins CDCC for White Ribbon Day community breakfast

Mayor Robyn Holmes joins community members for a BBQ for White Ribbon Day

Cook Shire Council was proud to join the Cooktown District Community Centre (CDCC) at The Lure Shop Tackleworld Cooktown this morning for their annual White Ribbon Day free BBQ breakfast, bringing the community together in a strong show of support for the prevention of gender-based violence.

Hosted by CDCC’s Family, Youth & Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) team, the event provided a warm, welcoming space for community members, service providers, and local organisations to connect, reflect, and stand united in the message that violence has no place in our homes or our community. Despite this being an exceptionally busy time of year across the DFV and community services sector, the CDCC team once again delivered a meaningful, well-attended event that centred on respect, safety, and positive relationships.

Council extends a heartfelt thank you to the entire CDCC team for their continued leadership and dedication to fostering safe and healthy relationships across Cooktown and the wider Shire. Their commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals and empowering community action remains invaluable.

The breakfast drew a large crowd, with the CDCC gents on the BBQ cooking up a storm and creating a relaxed atmosphere for conversation and connection. The strong turnout also reflected the growing number of community members — particularly men — who are willing to actively speak up, show up, and take a stand against abuse.

Cook Shire Council was represented by Mayor Robyn Holmes and a number of staff from across the organisation, who attended throughout the morning to show their support. Council thanks all staff who made the time to be present; their engagement was warmly acknowledged by CDCC organisers and reinforces Council’s shared commitment to creating a safer, more respectful Cook Shire.

Acknowledging the role of men in promoting healthy relationships and calling out abuse is vital, and today’s event served as a powerful reminder of the difference the community can make when standing together.

White Ribbon Day serves as an annual opportunity to reflect on the importance of preventing gender-based violence, supporting victim-survivors, and fostering conversations that lead to long-term cultural change.

Council continues to stand with CDCC and all local service providers working tirelessly to build a safer, more supportive community for everyone.
