SES providing fill your own sandbags as more wet weather expected

The State Emergency Service is offering free sandbags to residents as a low pressure system off the coast is forecast to bring more rain and thunderstorms to Far North Queensland and Australia’s northern coastline.

Residents can collect and fill their own sandbags at the Cooktown SES headquarters on Charlotte Street from 1pm Monday and Tuesday, the 5 and 6 January, 2026.

SES volunteers will also be available on Tuesday evening from 5:30pm to 7pm to answer questions about storm preparation and general safety advice.

The developing low has prompted forecasters to predict more rainfall and possible thunderstorm activity across the region in coming days.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the sandbag service and have a chat with experienced SES personnel about simple steps to prepare their properties ahead of the wet weather.

Stay informed about the weather through official sources including the Bureau of Meteorology and Council’s Disaster Dashboard, and Get Ready Queensland for practical advice on preparing for severe weather.
