Cook Shire Council is deeply disappointed to report multiple incidents of deliberate vandalism that occurred yesterday across several valued community spaces.
In a brazen act of destruction, individuals broke down security chains and bollards at Queen’s Oval before performing burnouts on the cricket pitch. The vandalism extended to additional locations including at John Street Oval, behind the Events Centre, the Charlotte Street roundabout, the vicinity of the dog park, and near Keatings Lagoon.
Council crews discovered the damage this morning and have immediately begun assessing the full extent of the destruction. CCTV footage is currently being reviewed to identify the vehicle and individuals responsible, with findings to be provided to Queensland Police.
“This is a disappointing way to start 2026,” said Cook Shire CEO, Brian Joiner “These are facilities that our entire community takes pride in and relies upon. The deliberate destruction of public property is not only illegal but shows complete disregard for fellow community members.”
The cricket pitch at Queen’s Oval serves local sporting clubs and has been carefully maintained by Council staff. The cost of repairing the damage will ultimately be borne by ratepayers – funds that could otherwise be directed toward essential community services and infrastructure improvements.
This behaviour is illegal
Council wishes to remind all residents that:
