Families across Cook Shire will have plenty of opportunities to get active, creative and connected these April school holidays, with a wide range of free activities planned for children and young people across the region.
Cook Shire Council has partnered with local services and community groups to deliver a diverse program of events, including sports activities, creative workshops, library craft sessions, outdoor adventures and community fun days.
One of the highlights of the program is the Shipwrecked Survival Challenge, an exciting outdoor adventure where children and youth will learn essential survival skills through fun, hands-on challenges. Held at William Daku Park, participants will work together, problem-solve and build resilience while learning practical outdoor skills in a safe and supportive environment.
For young creatives, the Create Art Workshops will bring hands-on art experiences to Lakeland and Cooktown. The workshops will guide children aged 6–13 through three engaging activities including button art, soap making and creating a “beach in a jar”. These sessions offer a fun opportunity for children to explore their creativity and take home their own handmade creations.
Local libraries will also be hosting a range of creative activities across Cooktown, Lakeland and Bloomfield, including beading and keychain making, wind chime workshops, LEGO building sessions, ‘Zine-making for Youth Week, and art activities supplied by the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).
Children looking to stay active can take part in a variety of sports and recreation programs throughout the holidays. Regular Touch Footy sessions at John Street Oval, Drop-In Sports at the Cooktown Events Centre, and Splash N’ Play sessions at the Cooktown Swimming Pool will give young people the chance to enjoy some friendly competition, stay active and connect with friends.
Families are also invited to unwind at Movie Afternoons at the Cooktown Events Centre, where family-friendly films will be screened each Friday during the school holidays.
Communities across the Shire will also host their own local activities. In Rossville, families can enjoy a Family Fun Day featuring inflatables, games, crafts and activities for children of all ages, while Coen will run a full program of events including sports activities, craft sessions, a movie night, disco and water play.
Cook Shire Council encourages families to take advantage of the wide range of free activities available throughout the region.
With events taking place across Cooktown, Lakeland, Bloomfield, Rossville and Coen, there are plenty of opportunities for children and young people to get involved, learn new skills and have fun these school holidays.
Some activities have limited spaces and require bookings, so families are encouraged to check the details and register early where required.
