Cook Shire Council is continuing to closely monitor Tropical Cyclone Maila, with Mayor Robyn Holmes and Council’s Disaster Management Officer providing a timely update to the community.
While the system remains unpredictable, Council and partner agencies have been actively “watching and waiting” throughout the week — tracking forecasts, coordinating preparations, and staying in close contact with communities across the region.
Mayor Holmes said that while uncertainty can cause concern, Cook Shire is well prepared following recent experience with Tropical Cyclone Narelle.
“Even though we don’t yet know exactly what TC Maila will do, our teams have been monitoring the system closely and making sure we’re ready to respond to whatever eventuates,” Mayor Holmes said.
“We understand that waiting can be unsettling, but the message to the community is clear — stay alert, not alarmed.”
Residents are encouraged to take simple, practical steps now to prepare their properties, including tidying yards and securing loose items, particularly as the region is likely to experience rainfall and increased winds regardless of the cyclone’s final path.
Council’s Disaster Management Officer reinforced the importance of staying informed through official channels, including the Cook Shire Disaster Dashboard, which will provide the most up-to-date information as the situation develops.
A Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning, where Council and emergency services will assess the latest Bureau of Meteorology advice and determine next steps. Council remains agile and ready to respond to changing conditions.
Community members are encouraged to use this time to prepare — not just for TC Maila, but as part of good practice during the wet season.
