Exhibition set to bloom at Nature’s Powerhouse ahead of Botanic Gardens Week 2026

A stunning new photography exhibition celebrating the beauty, detail, and diversity of the natural world has opened at Nature’s Powerhouse on Thursday 30 April 2026, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the Cooktown Botanic Gardens through the lens of acclaimed local photographer Colyn Huber of Lovegreen Photography.

The exhibition, which will be displayed in the Charles Tanner Gallery throughout the month of May, showcases a curated collection of botanical and nature-based imagery captured across the region. Through sweeping landscapes, intricate textures, and quiet garden moments, the exhibition invites visitors to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the environment around them.

The month-long display forms part of the lead-up to Botanic Gardens Week 2026 and highlights the important role botanic gardens play in conservation, creativity, education, and community wellbeing.

With more than 20 years of professional photography experience and an extensive portfolio of nature-inspired work, Colyn Huber brings a thoughtful and artistic perspective to the exhibition, capturing the character and beauty found within natural spaces.

As part of Botanic Gardens Day celebrations on Sunday 24 May 2026, Colyn will also host a hands-on Photography Workshop within the Cooktown Botanic Gardens.

Running from 10am to 1pm, the three-hour practical session will guide participants through both foundational and advanced photography techniques while exploring the gardens in an outdoor learning environment. Participants will have the opportunity to capture, experiment, and refine their skills while learning how perspective, composition, and observation can elevate a single image and strengthen a cohesive body of work.

At the heart of the workshop is the idea that the most powerful piece of equipment a photographer can use is their eye — with techniques and principles applicable whether shooting on a mobile phone or professional camera.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own camera or phone, along with comfortable shoes, a hat, and water bottle.

The workshop is open to participants aged 12 years and over, with tickets priced at $10 per person. Spaces are limited and bookings are essential.

The workshop will meet at the main gate of the Cooktown Botanic Gardens on Walker Street.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to hear directly from Colyn during a special Artist Talk on Botanic Gardens Day, where he will share insights into the inspiration behind the exhibition, his creative process, and the importance of capturing and preserving the beauty of natural environments through photography.

The exhibition is free to view and open to the public during Nature’s Powerhouse opening hours throughout May.
