One Buck. One Bag. Once a day – Abukkabag is back in the spotlight

With visitor numbers set to increase across the region during the upcoming Discovery Festival, Laura long weekend and peak tourism season, residents and visitors are being reminded of a simple and affordable way to dispose of everyday household rubbish responsibly.

The Abukkabag program offers a convenient waste disposal option for just $1 per vehicle, per day at any Cook Shire Waste Transfer Stations across the shire.

Whether you’ve missed bin collection day, returned from a camping trip with a bag of rubbish, finished a day fishing with fish frames and bait scraps to dispose of, or simply have an extra bag that won’t fit in the wheelie bin, Abukkabag provides an easy solution.

The program allows the disposal of one bag of general household waste up to 60 litres in size for a flat fee of $1. The bag can be brought to any Waste Transfer Station and disposed of during normal operating hours.

Abukkabag has been available since June 2024 and continues to provide a practical, low-cost option that helps reduce illegal dumping and keeps local communities, parks, campgrounds and waterways clean.

The program is popular with:

• Residents with an extra bag of household rubbish
• Campers and caravanners travelling through the region
• Fishers looking to dispose of fish frames, bait and seafood scraps responsibly
• Visitors wanting a simple and affordable waste disposal option

To keep the system fair and easy to use, the offer is limited to one bag per vehicle, per day, with a maximum bag size of 60 litres.

As the region prepares to welcome thousands of visitors over the coming months, everyone is encouraged to do their part to help keep the Cook Shire clean and beautiful.
