Balancing work and childcare? We want to hear from you.

Community drop-in sessions announced as Cook Shire’s Childcare Business Case enters its final stage of consultation.

Community members are being encouraged to take one final opportunity to help shape the future of childcare in Cooktown and surrounding communities, with independent consultants visiting Cooktown next week as consultation enters its final stage.

Cook Shire Council’s online community survey has already generated valuable feedback, and now the team preparing the independent Childcare Business Case wants to hear directly from local families, carers, employers and community members through a series of informal drop-in sessions at the Cooktown District Community Centre (CDCC).

The Childcare Business Case, being undertaken by Beacon Strategies on behalf of Cook Shire Council, will examine current childcare demand, identify service gaps and barriers to access, and explore opportunities to strengthen early childhood education and care across Cooktown and surrounding communities.

Importantly, the study isn’t just about childcare—it’s about supporting local families, strengthening workforce participation and helping ensure Cook Shire remains a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Whether you’re a parent or grandparent, currently use childcare, have struggled to access care, are planning to start a family, own a business affected by childcare availability, or simply have ideas about what our community needs, Council wants to hear from you.

The drop-in sessions provide a valuable opportunity to speak directly with the consultants preparing the business case, share your experiences and discuss what practical solutions could make the biggest difference for local families.

Last few days to have your say

If you can’t attend one of the drop-in sessions, there’s still time to contribute by completing Council’s online community survey.

The confidential survey takes around 10 minutes to complete and closes at 5:00pm on Friday 17 July.

Every survey response and conversation helps build a clearer picture of the childcare needs, challenges and opportunities across Cook Shire, ensuring the recommendations are informed by the people who know the community best.

Whether you attend a drop-in session or complete the survey online, your feedback will help shape the future of childcare across Cooktown and surrounding communities.
