Even during the wet season, it’s important to protect our treated water supply—and your household budget.
Many residents don’t realise that small leaks, especially those hidden underground or in toilets and irrigation systems, can add up to thousands of litres of lost water and result in unexpectedly high water bills. At a time when the cost of living is front of mind for many households, checking for leaks is one of the easiest things you can do to avoid surprise charges and reduce waste.
That’s why Cook Shire Council is encouraging all residents—whether you own or rent—to take a few minutes to check around their property and use their water meter to spot any signs of a hidden leak.
Watch: How to check for leaks using your water meter
Council has created a short, easy-to-follow video that shows you how to read your water meter and check for possible leaks.
You can also visit our dedicated Water Leaks page for step-by-step instructions, FAQs, and tips to help you better understand your bill and take action early.
Why it matters – even in the wet
Treated water takes effort, energy, and infrastructure to deliver to homes and businesses. While rain might be falling outside, the water that comes out of your tap is a different story. Every litre saved helps reduce pressure on our systems—and your wallet.
Simple resources available
- Flyers with helpful info are being delivered via PO Boxes and are also available at Council venues.
- Council teams read meters twice a year—so now is a good time to check that your meter is accessible and clear of overgrowth or debris.
- If you’re renting, talk to your property manager if you suspect a leak.
